| Bio: | ![]() Olivier Devereux aged 28 French Olivier was the second son of Mathieu and Emmanuelle Devereux, the Baron and Baroness de Clarisse. He was born the first of September, in the family's house just outside of Paris. Mathieu spent most of his time at court, attempting to curry favor with the king, and Emmanuelle's favorite activity was watching her two sons frolic on the grounds. Olivier's elder brother, Esme, was three years his senior. When Olivier was nine, he and Esme escaped from their mother and governess' watchful eye and discovered a stream in the woods behind the estate. Boys being boys, they took to shoving each other, and after one extraordinarily strong push, Olivier had uprooted his elder brother and landed him in the stream, which was deeper than either had expected. Esme's skull collided with a rock when he landed, and Olivier was already running in the opposite direction, fearing retribution for the shove. He was panting by the time he realised Esme wasn't following him. He made his careful, slow way back to the stream, in case Esme was hiding in the surrounding woods for him, but when he returned to their play spot, Esme was facedown in the water. Olivier pulled him from the stream and laid him on the bank, slapping his cold cheeks for nearly a minute before he supposed fetching his mother and governess would be a good idea. Esme's funeral was a pivotal point in Olivier's life, not only because it changed him significantly psychologically. He was the only son now, all responsibility to further the Devereux name lay on his small shoulders. He took over Esme's classes, leaving behind the carefree days he remembered. Latin, English, and French were his focus instead of creating war stories with his lead soldiers. Arithmetic replaced begging in the kitchen for cakes. His life changed all together. His parents blamed him for Esme's death, though they never specifically voiced it. His mother changed, grew withdrawn and pale, and spent most of her time in her rooms, reading or embroidering. His father remained at court, where, when Olivier was nineteen, he landed himself in extraordinarily hot water with a fellow courtier and ended up being murdered in a duel. Olivier was the head of the household when his father's body was lowered into a grave next to Esme's. He took his father's place at court, briefly, but found it provoking to have to treat everyone with the same calculated courtesy. The Devereuxs slowly lost favor and money; Mathieu had racked up a number of debts which Olivier had to pay off, and the house sank into a sort of permanent gloom which hung about everyone's head like a fog. Olivier was regarded as an irresponsible hothead with no regard for his name or his family, and family friends stopped paying courtesys and lamented the loss of Mathieu, who in their opinion had been a far better Baron than Olivier. Olivier was, in fact, an irresponsible hothead; he had a soft spot for gambling and prostitutes, and lost his temper frequently. The criticism he'd recieved from his parents prompted him to dismiss any and all who didn't share his interests, and he took full advantage of what money the family had left and spent lavishly on himself and his friends. The side the public did not see, however, was quite different. Olivier was lonely, he carried extreme guilt from the death of his brother, he was overwhelmed by the responsibility his father had left him, and he had no idea what to do with all the money. Instead of facing and fixing his problems, he decided that ignoring them was the best route. When he was twenty-five, Olivier and some friends went to the theatre, and he happened to spy Amandine Tremaine, an astonishingly lovely bourgeois girl working there. He was enthralled by her beauty and wit, and abandoned his friends' life of gambling and prostitutes to spend most of his time at the theatre, distracting Amandine from her work. Three months after they had first met, he asked her to marry him. The match was not obvious, a serving girl and a Baron seemed an unlikely pair. Olivier's fortune was less than great, he had little chance of ensnaring a rich wife with his well-known womanizing past, and he enjoyed Amandine's company, as she enjoyed his. His mother was adamant against the union, but conveniently died three weeks before the actual ceremony from consumption. Amandine's arrival at the house prompted almost a complete makeover. Olivier made sure his new wife had the finest of apparel, and he refurnished most of the house as to ensure happy guests. He reestablished friendships with many of his parents' old friends. Life was happy in the Devereux house, though Olivier realized that having Amandine around all the time was not quite the same as tense and provocative visits to the theatre. Though he's not sure he loves her completely, his naturally jealous nature prevents him from allowing her a lover, if she were to desire one. Three years after their marriage, their life had plateaued; neither were entirely satisfied with each other, and while Olivier attempted to sate Amandine's restlessness with jewelry and pretty clothes, he was beginning to feel the call to his former activities of gambling and salacious encounters. Luckily, perhaps, the revolution began, and the pair took a reviving trip to Normandy in hopes the uprising would settle by the time they returned home. Their hopes were not answered, however, and the Devereux's returned to find their house destroyed and the remaining members of the family dead. Olivier and Amandine fled France soon after, knowing his family's fate would be their own if they remained. After procuring a job for both himself and Amandine at a manor in England, he felt some hope that their relationship would rekindle in the face of such horrors, but he knows that Amandine is not truly happy with him. He is not generous as to offer her a release, however, and he has become increasingly paranoid that she had indeed taken a lover and he is determined to find her out. In short, Olivier is quick to anger, paranoid and he tends to hold a grudge. He is not cut out for a life of toil, and is constantly frustrated with his current surroundings. | |||||||||
